Intellectual Debts: Dorthea Lange

Before I found my way to anthropology, I was studying and practicing photography. I was about 20 when I really started doing a lot of photography, and I already had a darkroom setup in my bathroom after my second semester of taking courses at a community college. I was shooting pictures all the time and reading as much as I could about film, exposure, the zone system, cameras, and printing. I was a fiend, taking in as much as I could. Well, there were certain photographers whose work really pushed me toward anthropology, and whose influence is still in the mix today. One of them is Dorthea Lange, whose documentary work really appealed to me right from the start.

The above image by Dorthea Lange comes from this site.
